How to Maintain a “Classical Curiosity” Over Spring Break

Ever since my introduction into classical education, I have appreciated that it's not just an educational method; it's a lifestyle. Not only do I teach poetry to my students, but I read it myself. Not only do I encourage my students to read the classics, I read them myself. The classical lifestyle is a constant attention to the beauty to the world around us that we share with our students and blissfully indulge in as well.

As many schools are on spring break this week and many schools’ spring breaks are on the horizon, I thought this was a great time to remind ourselves that the classical education lifestyle never stops. While the "flavor" of the education might change when it's time for a much-needed break, the curiosity for the world around you should never stop! Enjoy these ideas to make the most of a classical spring break!

Literary Escapades

Spring break provides the perfect backdrop for immersive reading. Dive into classical literature, explore timeless works of fiction, or revisit the classics you've been meaning to read. Whether you're lounging on the beach or nestled in a cozy cabin, a good book can transport you to different worlds and eras. I personally love To Kill a Mockingbird and read it just about every spring break.

Historical Excursions

Use this break to embark on a historical journey. Visit local museums, historical sites, or art galleries. Engaging with artifacts and artworks firsthand can deepen your understanding of historical periods and classical civilizations, bringing your studies to life.

Language Immersion

Dedicate some time each day to language study. Whether you're learning Latin, Greek, or any other classical language, daily practice during the break can solidify your grasp of grammar, vocabulary, and translation skills.

Philosophical Reflection

Spring break provides a quiet space for contemplation. Set aside time to ponder classical philosophical ideas. Consider keeping a journal to jot down your reflections on ancient philosophical concepts and their relevance in today's world.

Artistic Pursuit

Explore your creative side by engaging in artistic endeavors inspired by classical themes. Whether it's painting, sculpture, or even music, expressing yourself through the arts can be a fulfilling way to internalize classical concepts.

Mathematical Marvels

Don't let the break disrupt your mathematical momentum. Challenge yourself with mathematical puzzles, explore the history of mathematical discoveries, or delve into the applications of mathematical principles in various fields.

Community Conversations

Engage in intellectual discussions with friends, family, or fellow enthusiasts. Organize a book club or a themed discussion group, providing a platform for shared learning and stimulating conversations.

Digital Detox with Documentaries

While a break from traditional coursework is valuable, consider replacing mindless screen time with educational documentaries. Explore documentaries on historical events, classical literature, or scientific breakthroughs to keep your mind active.

Classical Cooking Adventures

Connect your culinary interests with classical education by exploring recipes from ancient civilizations. Experiment with dishes inspired by historical periods, combining your love for cooking with a taste of the past. (If your spring break is an Easter break, I highly recommend taking a stab at Italian Easter Bread)

Wishing you all a relaxing and well-deserved spring break!
