Why We’re Educational Interventionists—Not Tutors
When parents seek academic support for their children, they often look for a tutor. But at Higdon Learning Solutions, we’re not tutors—we’re educational interventionists. While both roles provide academic assistance, the approach, goals, and impact are quite different. Understanding this distinction is crucial in ensuring your child receives the right kind of support.
What’s the Difference?
A tutor typically helps students understand subject material, complete homework, and prepare for tests. Tutors reinforce what students are already learning in the classroom, providing extra practice and clarification when needed. Their focus is often short-term, designed to help a student keep up with coursework.
An educational interventionist, on the other hand, goes beyond tutoring. We identify and address underlying learning challenges that may be preventing a student from reaching their full potential. This means we don’t just reteach content—we assess learning gaps, provide research-based strategies, and tailor instruction to develop foundational skills that lead to long-term success.
How Educational Intervention Helps Students Thrive
Many of the students we work with attend classical or liberal arts-based schools, where reading, writing, and critical thinking skills are central. Some students struggle with these areas due to learning disabilities, executive function challenges, or skill gaps. Our intervention process is designed to:
Diagnose Learning Needs – We assess where the student is struggling, whether it’s phonemic awareness, comprehension, written expression, or processing speed.
Use Research-Based Strategies – We employ multisensory, structured methods tailored to each student’s needs, helping them develop skills they can transfer across subjects.
Build Confidence and Independence – Our goal is not just to help students pass a test but to equip them with the tools they need to become confident, independent learners.
Collaborate with Parents and Educators – We work closely with families and teachers to ensure consistency and progress beyond our sessions.
More Than Just Catching Up
Tutoring is often a short-term solution—helping a student prepare for a test or complete a challenging assignment. Intervention is about closing learning gaps and equipping students with the strategies they need for lifelong success. Instead of simply reteaching material, we focus on how a child learns and how to make learning work for them.
If your child is struggling, it’s important to ask: Do they need help keeping up with classwork, or do they need an intervention that changes the way they learn? At Higdon Learning Solutions, we’re here to help students thrive—not just for the next test, but for the long run.
